Made it to 70% before DNF。 LOVED Such a Fun Age。 But this read more like a few very long journal entries mixed together。 At 70 percent I’m still learning another character’s background story without any sense of where this is heading。 Look forward to reading authors next book。

So this is one of those books where some readers might say "not much happened", but in my opinion, that wouldn't be a fair assessment。 This is a VERY character driven novel where we gradually get to know these characters now and uncover things that happened in their past that made them who they are now - flaws and all, and there's a lot of flaws。。。。This was a very well-written book with a campus setting and characters that you grow to know but not necessarily grow to love as you get to know them So this is one of those books where some readers might say "not much happened", but in my opinion, that wouldn't be a fair assessment。 This is a VERY character driven novel where we gradually get to know these characters now and uncover things that happened in their past that made them who they are now - flaws and all, and there's a lot of flaws。。。。This was a very well-written book with a campus setting and characters that you grow to know but not necessarily grow to love as you get to know them better。 There are themes of class and race and education and family and love weaved throughout the novel。 I do think that it was a tad long and maybe could have been edited and buttoned up a bit and that may have helped the feeling of not a lot happening。 Overall for me, this was a very well-written, character driven novel that I am glad I read, but also have a feeling will become a tad forgettable to me as time goes on。 I need to go back and read Reid's novel Such a Fun Age as I have heard great things about that one。 The level of writing of this novel definitely makes me want to read more from this author。 Thank you to Netgalley for an advanced reader copy and to Penguin Random House Influencer program for access to the free audiobook! 。。。more

I honestly don’t remember Reid’s debut that well at this point, but I remember really liking it。 The only plot summary I read for her latest beforehand was vague, but I was intrigued because I love campus novels and have worked a similar RA type job。 I also find college students/this age group endlessly fascinating。 I jumped in without reading much more by way of plot or early reviews and just settled into the story。 I’m seeing a lot of reviews that seem to think nothing happens and I disagree。 I honestly don’t remember Reid’s debut that well at this point, but I remember really liking it。 The only plot summary I read for her latest beforehand was vague, but I was intrigued because I love campus novels and have worked a similar RA type job。 I also find college students/this age group endlessly fascinating。 I jumped in without reading much more by way of plot or early reviews and just settled into the story。 I’m seeing a lot of reviews that seem to think nothing happens and I disagree。 While this is a character-driven story, there IS a plot。 But quite honestly, I think the main difference between me and a lot of those reviews is that I was almost disappointed when the plotline started to amp up because I was completely satisfied with just bopping from character to character, living inside their heads。 Each person was distinct, interesting, and intriguing。 Like I said, I came into this with a preconceived bias because I really really enjoy reading about and analyzing this age group, but I am honestly surprised that more people didn’t find the characters in and of themselves compelling。 That being said, I thought the story had a ticking time bomb undertone to me, like we were building to something big。 In the back of my mind from the start, I had the “where is this going?” thought ruminating, but I also trusted that wherever it went, it’d be worthwhile。 As it went on and things started to move more obviously forward, I was reading while metaphorically covering my eyes with my hand in an “I can’t watch!” kinda way, while also not being able to metaphorically look away。 There was a cringey trainwreck feel where all you can do is stand back and watch the crash。 Ultimately, it feels weird to say I enjoyed a car-crash vibe, but I had so much fun reading this。 It touched so interestingly on so many different topics like class, race, sexuality, power dynamics and more in a nuanced way that I found uncomfortable, memorable and thought-provoking。 That’s not easy to do! I get why it’s polarizing and I’m not necessarily here to make the case that it objectively shouldn’t be, but more so to explain why what I brought into this as a reader and a person made it a subjectively really really entertaining journey for me。 。。。more

Kiley Reed has an aptitude for telling a story beyond what is written on the page。 Something about Come and Get It was viscerally discomfiting and I couldn’t get enough of it。 While this coming of age story largely focuses on Millie and her residents, one could argue that Agatha Paul - mature and put together - experiences her own evolution, navigating complicated relationships and a lurid fascination with the young women she is observing。 Her routinely structured comportment, unfurling and pull Kiley Reed has an aptitude for telling a story beyond what is written on the page。 Something about Come and Get It was viscerally discomfiting and I couldn’t get enough of it。 While this coming of age story largely focuses on Millie and her residents, one could argue that Agatha Paul - mature and put together - experiences her own evolution, navigating complicated relationships and a lurid fascination with the young women she is observing。 Her routinely structured comportment, unfurling and pulling Millie into the folds, makes this a gripping read for any age。If there is ever an on-screen adaptation of Come and Get It, I need Ayo Edebiri to be cast as Millie。 For science。 。。。more

Told from multiple points of view, this is the story of several women whose lives intersect at college in Fayetteville, Arkansas, with a particular focus on race and money。 I liked Reid's first book, and I LOVED this one。 No sophomore slump here! Reid is a major literary talent。 I stayed up to finish this; I was genuinely nervous and fretful and had to remind myself that "this is fiction; you are getting worked up over an imaginary person's problems。" Reid's especially great at writing dialogue; Told from multiple points of view, this is the story of several women whose lives intersect at college in Fayetteville, Arkansas, with a particular focus on race and money。 I liked Reid's first book, and I LOVED this one。 No sophomore slump here! I really enjoyed this book and felt entertained the whole time。 "This is coming-of-age story about a group of women living in and around a college campus and the micro- and macro-aggressions that inform their relationships and conflicts。" While I don't always love character driven books, this was done nicely as there were some different plot lines。 I also love a book on a college campus and found the RA life SOOO interesting。 I definitely want to read the authors other book, Such a Fun Age! Kiley Reid's Come and Get It is a captivating tale set at the University of Arkansas。 It follows Millie Cousins' venture into a risky opportunity with visiting professor Agatha Paul。 This journey through ambition and ethical dilemmas deepens into human complexities and moral gray areas。 Reid excels in crafting characters with rich backstories and motivations, making the narrative not just a plot-driven story but a nuanced exploration of human nature and societal issues。As a follow-up to Such a F Kiley Reid's Come and Get It is a captivating tale set at the University of Arkansas。 It follows Millie Cousins' venture into a risky opportunity with visiting professor Agatha Paul。 This journey through ambition and ethical dilemmas deepens into human complexities and moral gray areas。 Reid excels in crafting characters with rich backstories and motivations, making the narrative not just a plot-driven story but a nuanced exploration of human nature and societal issues。As a follow-up to Such a Fun Age, this novel showcases Reid's growth, adeptly weaving themes of desire, misconduct, and the intricate dynamics of race and identity。 It's a thought-provoking piece that doesn't simplify the conversation on race but enriches it by highlighting its characters' layered experiences and choices。Come and Get It stands out for its intense storytelling and insightful look into the entangled lives of its characters。 It is a compelling read for those who seek literature that challenges and entertains。Thank you to PENGUIN GROUP Putnam, G。P。 for providing an e-Arc of Come and Get It by Kiley Reid for my review。 。。。more

For probably the first 100-200 pages of this book, I truly had no idea what I was getting into。 As pages ticked on, I found myself having ah-ha moment after ah-ha moment。 Personally, I've been having a lot of conversations about consumerism and money lately, and this book brought up so many of the topics I've been discussing。Mixed in with commentary on race, I thought the below quote from a NYT review of Come and Get It perfectly sums up Reid's story:"With her remarkable examination of American For probably the first 100-200 pages of this book, I truly had no idea what I was getting into。 As pages ticked on, I found myself having ah-ha moment after ah-ha moment。 Personally, I've been having a lot of conversations about consumerism and money lately, and this book brought up so many of the topics I've been discussing。Mixed in with commentary on race, I thought the below quote from a NYT review of Come and Get It perfectly sums up Reid's story:"With her remarkable examination of American monoculture — from fast food to pop culture to handed-down ideals — she tells a story about economics that’s neither poverty porn nor finance fantasy。 Instead, it’s about the hows and whys of everyday consumerism and the insidious toll it takes on our lives。"Though each character in the novel had personality traits to like and dislike, Reid provided a completely unbiased picture of each of them and lets the reader come to conclusions on their own terms。 Overall, I'm not sure if the story itself was as remarkable as I wanted it to be, but the underlying messages made me love the journey which is why Kiley Reid is an auto-buy author for me。 。。。more

I really wanted to love Come & Get It since I loved Such A Fun Age but I can honestly just say it was an ok read。The main focus was 3 women of different ages and backgrounds。 All had their issues which we learned about throughout the story。 Many secondary characters were featured but I feel like they were more or less placeholders and lacked development。The climax definitely picked up but it left for me many unanswered questions and an unclear explanation as to the actions of the characters。

I enjoyed this。 Typically books with a lot of dialogue are not my thing。 However, Reid’s dialogue is not cringy or contrived, it feels like exactly what people would say。 Her skill lies in capturing uncomfortable realities, anxieties and awkwardness in speech, not just prose。 This is a great read for an airplane or the beach, flies right by。

Full on belly laughed several times。 So fun - takes me back to college and dorm drama!

rounding up because it’s set in Fayetteville。 I wanted to love it soooo much - all the mentions of my favorite places in Fayetteville, an RA for a main character, southern university culture。 there was so much for me to relate to, yet this just missed the mark。 i typically love slow character-focused books, but the characters were all one-dimensional and the plot just didn’t go anywhere。 i understand that this was supposed to be a commentary on class and money, but unfortunately just missed the rounding up because it’s set in Fayetteville。 I wanted to love it soooo much - all the mentions of my favorite places in Fayetteville, an RA for a main character, southern university culture。 there was so much for me to relate to, yet this just missed the mark。 i typically love slow character-focused books, but the characters were all one-dimensional and the plot just didn’t go anywhere。 i understand that this was supposed to be a commentary on class and money, but unfortunately just missed the mark。 。。。more

Come And Get It lets us into the world of a college campus dorm, weaving together the complex worlds of the young women who live within it。 The main character Millie is a responsible RA who finds herself veering off the path she set for herself through pranks, mishaps, and an unexpected love interest。 We see how all of those events unfold as it relates to the other women in the dorm she works at。 The book started off slow for me but a couple chapters in I was hooked into the rich characters that Come And Get It lets us into the world of a college campus dorm, weaving together the complex worlds of the young women who live within it。 The main character Millie is a responsible RA who finds herself veering off the path she set for herself through pranks, mishaps, and an unexpected love interest。 We see how all of those events unfold as it relates to the other women in the dorm she works at。 The book started off slow for me but a couple chapters in I was hooked into the rich characters that Kiley Reid so lovingly develops。 They are all messy and flawed yet relatable and lovable at the same time。 I’ll be reading more Kiley Reid after this! 。。。more

thank you to the publisher for my arc!I went into this with fairly high expectations due to how popular Such a Fun Age was but I'm beginning to think I should've read that first due to how bored i was reading this。 I was expecting a book that discusses how toxic colleges can be, discussions on race, lgbt and i feel like it barely touched the surface。 this could've been so much more than it was。 thank you to the publisher for my arc!I went into this with fairly high expectations due to how popular Such a Fun Age was but I'm beginning to think I should've read that first due to how bored i was reading this。 I was expecting a book that discusses how toxic colleges can be, discussions on race, lgbt and i feel like it barely touched the surface。 this could've been so much more than it was。 。。。more

Wow, such a fun title! This poignant and edgy read just got named the @GMAbookclub pick for February so you know it’s a polarizing one! CW: suicidal ideation, death of an animal, blood/gore, prof/student relationshipYou’ll like this one if you enjoy books that are light on plot and heavy on character studies。 Notes: takes place at University of Arkansas。 Millie is a Black woman, Agatha is a white woman, and Kennedy is a white woman。 Millie and Agatha are in a sapphic relationship。(3。5 stars)

Hmm。 Too bad it didn’t grab me like her first book。 The characters here are good but I feel the plot lacked。

Is there a plot? I’m not sure。 Last 20% were good。 Too many characters and sub plots。 Wouldn’t recommend。
